Signs, Synchronicities, and the Universe's Way of Winking at You
Coincidence? Manifestation? All of the above?
Spoiler alert, this post might get a little woo-woo, or spiritual, so if that’s not your vibe - you are free to exit here, but if you stick around, you’ll get a sneak peek into how I view the world around me.
You know those moments that catch you off guard, that have no business happening in that exact place, in that exact moment of time, but yet they still do?
Some call them coincidences, I’ve learned to see them as a synchronicity. Defined as:
The coincidental occurrence of events that seem related but are not explained by conventional mechanics of causality.
Pretty much something that did happen, but probably shouldn’t have.
Let me give you an example… You’re driving in the car contemplating a big decision. Maybe its about a new job to apply for or even a job you just lost, deciding whether it’s time to move to a new town, home, or apartment, whether you should start that business you’ve been thinking about, you get the picture. Then you look at the clock and you see the magic numbers, 11:11, 3:33, 5:55, and realize you’ve look at the clock at that exact time for the past 3 days. Coincidence?
Or when a loved one has passed on and every time you see a light refraction rainbow, you know it’s her way of giving you a little wave, a hug, a pep talk. Little magical moments constantly happening around us. They catch us off guard, give a moment of pause and leave you with a sense that it means something.
But the big moments… the life-altering events that seem to open a portal to something beyond what our minds can comprehend. Whatever you wish to call it - God, The Universe, Source, a Higher Power - those moments give us a reminder that there is so much more happening around us. Like when you bump into a friend you haven’t seen in years who has an opportunity specifically for you; or you cancel plans only to learn there was a major accident at the time and on the road you would have been on. Again, coincidence?
No matter how much control we think we have, it’s hard to imagine there is not more at play in this life, on this Earth, constantly orbiting us. For me personally, I call it the universe. It just feels right to me. So whatever sits right and feels good to you - go with that.
If you were to ask me if I believe in coincidences, I would ask you how much time you had. The short answer is: sure, I believe in coincidences. The long answer is, “Yes, and no.” No, because I am one of those annoying people that believe everything happens for a reason. From the big to the small, I think 9/10 times we can find the meaning in just about anything that happens to us (good or bad). But the other one time, I think things just happen with no explanation.
If I reflect on my own life, it’s pretty clear it’s just been one giant synchronistic-cosmic-event after another. Let’s start from where I view my major left turn in life… Attending the Air Force Academy. There was zero reason for me to commit to that school. No one in my family was in the military, I never had a desire to join the military, I chose that school because I wanted to play for the volleyball coaches. Not exactly the best reason to commit to a school with the main focus of molding young adults to later become leaders in the military.
Had I never attended the academy, I never would have returned to Arizona for a year, to have another shot at the recruiting process. Only to end up in Alaska to:
1. meet Quinn
2. truly discovery myself and learn who I am with no outside sources influencing my decisions
3. adopt Moose who I strongly believe to be one of my soulmates (don’t even get me started on soulmates)
4. land my dream job on the staff of a collegiate volleyball team
5. Realize that dream job was temporary
6. Take another hard left turn to become obsessed with and advocate for small businesses, local start-ups, women entrepreneurs, the outdoor industry, etc…
(I’m obviously giving a very broad overview. If I were to go into detail of all the synchronies from those years, this would become a novel)
Had I ever desired to visit Alaska? Not really. Was there any logical reason for me to attend that school? Also no, they didn’t really have the major I wanted. Yet, still I went and on my first day met my future spouse.
Or how about a smaller scale example… The past month-ish it seemed like everywhere I turned I’d hear or learn something about bees. Yes, bees— those little flying pollinators. They were swarming (pun intended) everything in my path.
The book I’m reading, meeting my brother’s friend who sells honey and other bee products, watching the With Love, Meghan series on Netflix where the opening scene is slow motion bees and her harvesting honey… Thus my curiosity and fascination with beeswax starts to grow and suddenly I’m on the hunt for beeswax candles.
I research some nearby locations with the potential to carry candles. I pick one, get in the car and go for an adventure. The place is not what I expected. Although filled with bee memorabilia, doesn’t have exactly what I’m looking for. I settle for one candle and move on to the next errand (not beeswax candle related), a thrift store.
I walk in, looking for something completely different, glassware, when seemingly out of nowhere, in the same aisle of the glassware happens to be (🐝) beeswax candles. Call it a manifestation, call it a coincidence, I choose to believe it’s all of the above. But mostly, just the universe telling me it has my back, at all times.
Showing me it’s paying attention. Like saying,
“Hey, we see you’ve been on the hunt for some beeswax candles so ta-da! Here are some in the place you least expected.”
or
“We know you’ve had the inner itch to move closer to family, so how about we give you an excuse (your brother’s wedding) to uplift your life, sell almost everything you own, throw caution to the wind, and go for it!” (Based on a true story 🙃).
Trust me when I say, I couldn’t make this up even if I tried. And I know it doesn’t just happen to me.
I would love to hear your synchronistic stories, long or short, big or small, that have happened to you. Finding a $5 bill in your back pocket when you really wanted to stop for coffee on the way to work. Or bumping into an old friend when you were just thinking about them that morning. Or having a curiosity about opening your own retail location someday only to be offered a retail manager position in the same week (again, based on a true story). I want to read them all!
I’ll leave you with this, before we really get down the rabbit hole nobody asked for…
If anything, I hope the next time you notice the clock hitting 11:11, 12:12, 3:33, every so often you’ll stop and remember it’s the universe’s way of winking at you. Reminding you, you’re never alone. Sending you a small wave and showing you it’s paying attention. Bringing a touch of whimsy in to our daily lives. And I think that’s something we could use more of these days.
’Til next time, friends💫
